About Us
Welcome to Oracle! We are a creative literary magazine, showcasing art, photography, and writing across all genres. We celebrate the voices of current and former students, faculty, and staff, creating a space where our community's creativity takes shape.
Our Story
Origins
In 1986, Dr. Rickey Cotton founded The Oracle Magazine, which gained notable traction by former students Alisa DeBorde and Paul T. Corrigan. It wasn’t long before Dr. Corrigan took the reins of Oracle from 2009-2011. By 2013, Professor Marlon Dempster took over as Editor-in-Chief.
With this new management, Oracle saw many changes, primarily its goal to feature students both within and outside the editing room. This new goal allows students to reform their editing skills, as well as provide an opportunity for recognition, inclusivity, and experiential learning. Though there have been numerous changes throughout Oracle, we strive to provide the best experience for our readers and students.
Carrying the torch
Oracle is a space for like-minded individuals to collaborate, share ideas, and engage with the work of peers, teaching students design, communication, publication, editing, and copyediting. Prof. Dempster was instrumental in transforming Oracle into a mentorship for professional development. This expansion challenged students to serve in editor roles, and in 2021, Oracle went digital. Due to Prof. Dempster’s belief in the power of the written word and in the students he mentored through Oracle, we honor his legacy by remembering his impact.
The future
Oracle publishes a comprehensive literary magazine with a thematic collection of student works each spring. We are forever grateful to the faculty members who have kept Oracle burning bright and a guiding light for students. We will persist in preserving the flame.
Keep shining.
In loving memory of Prof. Marlon Dempster
